The program features new works by two of our audiences’ favourite local composers, Daniel Mehdizadeh and conductor Ronald Royer.
In addition, Wanes Moubayed, artistic director of the Canadian Arabic Orchestra, has created a new concerto for oud that will premiere at that concert. Wanes believes that this is the first oud concerto ever written in Canada, saying:
The oud was always something mysterious for me.
My dreams was always to compose a concerto for oud, because the oud – in the Arabic culture – was used as an instrument to accompany singers. It’s not really used as a solo instrument. I wanted to bring the oud in a different way. It’s now at the centre of the orchestra and performs a solo part.
Wanes’s grandfather, whom he never met, made ouds – and Wanes has even been able to find and purchase two of his grandfather’s instruments since moving to North America.
The oud is a Middle Eastern instrument with a short neck (fingerboard) that looks like a lute. it typically has 11 strings grouped into six courses, although it could have anywhere from 10-13 strings grouped into 5-7 courses. You can learn about the oud on Wikipedia, or click on the video below to see our oud soloist, Charbel Rouhana, performing with the Oriental Orchestra of the Lebanese Conservatory.
