Scarborough Symphony Orchestra is tuning up for the first concert of the 2013-2014 season. And a truly powerful opening it is, with a selection of pieces that will set the tone for this incredible season.
Our season opening concert at the Citadel will feature Gustav Mahler’s majestic “Symphony No. 1 (Titan).” The soloists on this program are Toronto Symphony musicians: oboist Sarah Jeffrey and horn player Gabriel Radford.
SPO Music Director, Ronald Royer, has been commissioned by Sarah and Gabriel to compose a “Rhapsody for Oboe, Horn and Orchestra” and this Canadian piece will be a world premiere. Gabriel will also play “Fantasia on Two Newfoundland Songs for Horn and Orchestra” by Toronto composer Jim McGrath.
Sarah will play the beautiful “Gabriel’s Oboe” from the motion picture The Mission, composed by Ennio Morricone (who also composed “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”). Starting the program will be another majestic composition, the introduction to “Also sprach Zarathustra, Introduction,” which everyone will recognize from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
