No, this concert doesn’t feature the music of James Bond. But, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra’s stunning 2013-2014 season finale does feature Russian Showpieces.

There won’t be any cannons firing in this special performance. Instead, you’ll enjoy the 20th century masterpieces of Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich and Aram Khachaturian – the “Three Titans” of Soviet music.

Plus, there’s something special in store for this concert – our annual fundraising Silent Auction. This popular evening raises money to support the orchestra and the great work done in our community by the Rotary Club of North Scarborough.

The Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra puts the spotlight on Masterpieces of French Music with its upcoming March concert performance, featuring the Toronto Choral Society.

French classical music has its roots in the sacred music of the Catholic Church and dates back as far as the 8th century or earlier. By the 19th Century, often called the Romantic Era, French composers like Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy developed a style called Impressionism, which emphasized tone “colours”, using chords purely for their sound (as opposed to for their harmonic role). This concert features pieces by both these renowned Romantic Era composers, as well as Emmanuel Chabrier.

Among the other French pieces featured is a work by Gabriel Faure, a more contemporary artist, and one of the foremost French composers of his generation, whose musical style influenced many 20th Century composers.

Have you ever stopped to think about the richness of Canadian music? The musical heritage of Canada reflects the diverse influences that have shaped our country. Today, Canadian artists, composers and conductors are famous the world over.

The Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra is proud to spotlight Canadian music in our performance Canadian Portraits.

Highlighting the evening are performances by The Canadian Staff Band of the Salvation Army conducted by Toronto-born Howard Cable, renowned conductor, arranger, music director, composer, and radio and television producer, and Salvation Army Band Master John Lam, a professional musician and music educator.

This exceptional evening features music of Newfoundland, Ontario, Quebec, Canadian folk songs and much more. Don’t miss this celebration of Canadian musical heritage.

Canadian Portraits

On Saturday, the musical cultures of the East blended harmoniously with the music of the West. Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra celebrated those two musical traditions with a special concert called “East Meets West” at St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Anglican Church in Scarborough. The concert was well-attended by music lovers from both the Chinese and Western communities and featured a fantastic selection of music from both traditions.

Among the performers was Toronto soprano Yiping Chao, whose pure and bright voice moved the audience deeply. Ms Chao performed three traditional Chinese folk songs: two versions of” Embroidering a Pouch”, one from Shanxi province and one from Yunnan province, as well as the song “Lovesick” from Xinjiang. In addition, Ms Chao performed two Chinese art songs: “Beloved Father” and “Qomolangma” from Tibet.

The orchestra enjoyed tremendous support from many people in Chinese community and there were several honoured guests. The Consulate of the People’s Republic of China was represented by Mr. Zhong, Miss Yang attended from the Beijing Association and Dr. Liang, Chairman of the Chinese Artists Society was also present. The orchestra hopes for continued cooperation and support from the Chinese community in the future and is considering other performances featuring the music of the East.

 

Christmas on Stage and Screen

This year, experience the sounds of Christmas as you’ve never heard them before. The Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra has put together a unique package of Christmas music drawn from both stage and screen for your enjoyment.

This heart-warming evening features SPO conductor Ronald Royer, conductor Geoffrey Butler and performances by the musicians of the Salvation Army Scarborough Citadel (including many young artists), the Toronto Coral Society and young artist Talisa Blackman on piano.

You’ll hear many familiar pieces from the films “Miracle on 34th Street,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Home Alone” and “The Polar Bear Express,” as well as Christmas traditions, such as The Nutcracker Suite,” “The Messiah” and much more. You can even sing along to some favourite Christmas carols.

China has had a well-developed musical culture that dates back more than 3,000 years to the Zhou dynasty and music was seen as essential to the harmony and longevity of the state.  Immerse yourself in a rich blend of Chinese and western classical music as Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra presents East Meets West.

This spectacular evening features performances by Yiping Chao (soprano), Lesley Duff (flute), young artist Danielle Girard (violin), Michelle Kang (on the Chinese guzheng), David McCartney (piano), composer and young artist Kevin Zi-Xiao He, young artist Boris Chang (oboe) and young artists from St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Anglican Church.
